HILO, HAWAII, 2 January 2008 – A defining success of Rider Levett Bucknall's newest office in Waikoloa, Hawaii is the recent completion of the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home, the first facility of its kind on the Big Island and in the state of Hawaii. Bearing the name of World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Yukio Okutsu, this new Federal- and State- funded, 96-room facility will provide eligible veterans with affordable assisted living and domiciliary care.
Acting as turnkey Program Manager to facility manager Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, Rider Levett Bucknall's involvement began with pre-construction services; assisting in the design process by providing preliminary estimates, budget development, contractor selection, and Value Engineering sessions; and continued on through to full-time, on-site project management services and construction oversight. Throughout construction, scope changes caused the project to go nine percent over budget; but through knowledge of local costs, materials options and suppliers, Rider Levett Bucknall was able to Value Engineer the project back to the original modified budget, while adding back $750,000 worth of construction that had originally been eliminated due to budget constraints.
